Home to sunny skies and blue water, Nice is a popular destination for experiencing the Mediterranean. Beyond its scenery, the city has a range of attractions that draw in visitors of all types, including:
- Promenade des Anglais. Following along the Baie des Anges beaches, this pedestrian area was first built as a small footpath in 1820 and expanded to a road in 1931. Road traffic through this area goes underground, allowing tourists to walk and bike through the Promenade des Anglais’ various museums, hotels, and buildings.
- Musee Matisse. Popular among art lovers, the Musee Matisse features 68 paintings and 218 drawings done by the artist Matisse. The museum is housed in a Genoese villa on Cimiez Hill that served as Matisse’s home from 1918 to 1954 and provides visitors with a clear idea of the artist’s unique methods and progression over the years.
- Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Nicolas. Built in 1912 by Tsar Nicolas, the Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Nicolas is regarded as one of the best examples of an Orthodox Church outside of Russia. The cathedral is decorated with murals and ornamental icons and remains an active place of worship, so visitors must adhere to various rules when in the church.
